The saying goes that you should do 1 thing each day that scares you. This translates into pushing outside your comfort zone. Let’s face it, no one accomplishes much or breaks out of old routines by staying in their same comfort zone. With moving to a new city, I have found myself constantly pushed outside my comfort zone. Whether that is driving around town 100% dependent on my GPS, meeting new friends, or networking within a new town. Each day, it gets a little easier. But still, not comfortable. I listened to an interview last week on a podcast where the author talked about how she created a list at the end of each day including:
- 5 things she is grateful for that day
- 1 Accomplishment
- 1 Scary thing a.k.a what got you outside your comfort zone
Thinking of my own situation I decided it was time to up this ante on the scary thing. During a time of change or uncertainty, I think this number needs to increase. Somedays I shoot for 5. Other days, I make it with 3. Either way, recognizing that I did something that day that pushed me to do more, helps me realize I am making progress and not becoming a hermit in my new town. Reflecting back on last week’s list, I am realizing that the “accomplish” items for this week are a direct result of the progress I am made due to my the actions from my “scary list” in the previous week.
